Fashion designer Zoe Brown
Creativity is written all over Zoe Brown, literally. Tattoos adorn the Canberra fashion designer’s skin and a delicate mane of pastel pink and purple locks fall around her face. As a little girl Zoe would edit her own clothing for her Barbie dolls and always had a desire to look interesting and unique.
Zoe describes herself as an“internet whore” and is constantly combing through online blogs. There is a distinct “pop culture” aspect to her designs. “I also look to social media a lot… I sort of play on things that the youth of today care about.”
In 2011 she graduated from the CIT Bachelor of Design (Fashion), a course that saw her endure 20-hour days and brief ventures into sustainable fashion. Her graduate collection, entitled ‘The Collector’ was inspired by Melbourne based tattoo artist, Rose Hardy.
For ‘The Collector’ Zoe wanted to look at how people perceive tattoos and explore the idea that they are a collection of art works that can be interpreted in many ways. She commissioned Hardy to do six drawings, which Zoe then used as the basis for each of her designs. “One of them was quite an intricate heart that she’d [Hardy] drawn, so I manipulated and abstracted her pictures to create my own designs.” The designs are made up of striking pastels in chiffon, stretch suede, denim and contrasting black pleather all with laser cut details, a process that had to be outsourced all the way to Tasmania.
At the moment Zoe is taking a mini break from designing to work and save for the launch of her own label. Within the next year the aim is to release a new collection or extend on ‘The Collector’ to make it more commercial. Eventually she would like to move to Melbourne and intern with an established designer though she says “Canberra has an easy connection base and is a really good place to make a start for yourself.”
Whether it be in Canberra, Melbourne or anywhere else, Zoe Brown looks set to collect a strong following as she embarks on her career in fashion design.
